London’s Shannen SP has had an ear for cutting edge club sounds since her secondary school days, when she developed a penchant for bass at DMZ nights and Club Exodus in Leeds. In the late 2010s, her NTS residency and multidisciplinary Ø party at Corsica Studios with Kode9 highlighted African diasporic genres from kuduro to gqom, bringing on guests like Nazar and DJ Lag. On Mzansi Bass, her latest curatorial effort for Colombian label TraTraTrax, Shannen SP assembles a team of South African producers innovating on local genres like 3-step, gqom, and amapiano. From veterans like DJ Lag to newcomers like Jay Music, the artists featured here share a murky minimalism that still imparts an irresistible groove, filling out the spaces between the four-on-the-floor.

Kaleo (a Hawaiian word for “the sound”), are a group of talented young rock/blues musicians from (where else would you expect?) Mosfellsbaer, outside Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik, and only recently relocated to Austin, Texas, in 2015.
Having riled up a significant following in their home country as well amassing a horde of streams on Spotify, the band signed with Atlantic Records, and now we have their first complete gift to American listeners.
A/B sounds like a greatest hits album. In a way it kind of is, as it draws from Kaleo’s Icelandic self-titled debut and the handful of singles that have been released in America.

Lately, the Backrooms have felt inescapable. The breakout horror movie now reigns as A24’s highest-grossing film to date, but the lore bears repeating: In 2019, a a drab office space with sickly yellow wallpaper, photographed from an askew angle, was shared anonymously on 4chan. A comment suggested this place lies on the fringe of reality and you could slip into it and get lost forever. The post quickly became a vaunted piece of creepypasta, influencing everything from Severance to Playboi Carti, and it has been adopted as everyday parlance to describe any eerie, liminal space. Hit That Perfect Beat: The London Records Story is a double-CD companion to a podcast of the same name, charting the history of the label from the early 1980s, after the British branch of Decca Records was acquired by PolyGram. Though the label was reopened in the 2010s, the compilation stops in the early 2000s, bringing highlights from more than 20 years of hit releases.

Founded in Long Island, New York in 1969, Mountain were one of the most influential American rock bands of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Their musical style fused blues, hard rock and progressive influences and was anchored around the virtuoso guitarist Leslie West, the producer, writer and multi-instrumentalist Felix Pappalardi, drummer Corky Laing and keyboard player Steve Knight.
Taking inspiration from the legendary British band Cream, West had approached producer Pappalardi (who had worked with Cream and Jack Bruce) with a view to him producing West’s first solo album. The resulting album ‘Mountain’ was released in July 1969 and saw West backed by Felix Pappalardi on bass and keyboards and drummer N.D. Smart.

She makes that clear covering the MC5 classic starting most of the shows on last year’s ‘Paper Doll Live’ tour promoting her recent release. After The Beau Brummels dissolved in 1968 following their swan song, Bradley’s Barn, it was doubtful that we’d ever hear from the band again, despite their individual and collective brilliance. In the glory days of Italy’s library music session scene, Giancarlo Barigozzi and his cohorts were like Milan’s answer to L.A.’s legendary Wrecking Crew — if the latter were cutting one-size-fits-all soundtrack music for film and TV licensing. Expanded reissue of the cult 1991 Skooshny compilation, now collecting all twenty-one of the LA power-pop trio’s recordings from 1971 to 1981 including four tracks new to this edition.
Skooshny is an L.A.-based psych-folk-pop trio who originally came together in 1971, a time that singer/guitarist Mark Breyer later said was “too late for the Byrds, too early for R.E.M.” Breyer and drummer David Winogrond had been in a Chicago-area trio, Brevity, before moving to L.A. in the early ’70s to try their luck on the West Coast. They met guitarist/keyboardist Bruce Wagner after placing an ad in a music publication and he continued to be an on-again/off-again member. Concertgoers were treated to a 3-hour rock clinic in downtown Atlanta last night, as Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band brought their “Land of Hopes and Dreams” tour to State Farm Arena. The show comes midway through a string of dates that are shaping up to be arguably the most overtly political tour of Springsteen’s career, marked by direct references to current political figures, pointed onstage remarks, and a setlist structured around protest and dissent.
