Five years ago, Michael Cavanagh, long-time percussion expert for psych-rock powerhouse King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, made his solo debut under the CAVS moniker with a self-titled effort.
The ten-song drums-only effort was an exercise in the drummer’s ability to capture a listener’s attention with exclusively drum patterns, resulting in a groovy, atmospheric effort that ultimately didn’t catapult CAVS into the solo spotlight like similar artists of his ilk. The difficult transition from band member to lone musician is a bumpy, often misdirected endeavor that rarely seems to go well for the artist who dares undertake it. Still, in traditional Lizard Wizard fashion, Cavanagh wasn’t discouraged with the difficulties of his debut, but inspired.

On their self-titled album (and their first recordings for the Thrill Jockey label) North Carolina group Setting takes rustic acoustic sounds into deep space, sitting around a cosmic campfire and creating a group sound that’s naturalistically beautiful and mysterious. The trio of Nathan Bowles, Jaime Fennelly, and Joe Westerlund work in both improvisation and composition with stringed instruments, synthesizers, and percussion, landing in a place that’s partially informed by traditional Appalachia, part droning fields of synthesis, and part meditative Krautrock repetition. All of these aspects of Setting’s sound are in play on the album’s opening track “Heard a Bubble.” The nearly nine-minute piece opens with a lonely banjo line, and is quickly joined…

With members from various groups in the Melbourne indie rock underground on board, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Season 2’s first album, Power of Now, would be a low-key, off-kilter delight. The third solo album by New Orleans D.I.Y. musician Urq (Spllit, W-9), This Dismal Village marks his Exploding in Sound label debut.
It’s his first to be recorded entirely on a four-track cassette Portastudio, almost ditching any digital elements in the process (although some chords from a phone app were looped into “Kings in Bed,” for instance). A dingy, lo-fi blend of playful prog-pop, druggy psychedelia, angular punk, and alternate tunings, it’s a dystopia-themed concept album that travels through time with stops in the Dark Ages, the 1950s, and the present, and each track represents a location in the village. While not recommended for those in a dour or earnest mood, cynicism is welcome.

The term legend is an overused description, but in Dale Watson’s case, it’s a perfect fit. Kahan surprise dropped The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs – an extended version of the new album, featuring four new tracks and bringing the track list to a massive 21 songs.
Instead of tacking the new songs at the end of the album, Kahan decided to sprinkle them throughout. “Lighthouse” is the first of the new songs, landing at No. 5 on the tracklist, sandwiched in between the already released “Downfall” and “Paid Time Off.” The next track added is “Staying Still,” which comes after “Paid Time Off” and before the album’s titular track. The final two new songs, “A Few of Our Own” and “Orbiter” land much further down the album at No. 19 and No. 20, respectively.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis create the original score for Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, Netflix‘s Norwegian detective drama. The pair has previously teamed on soundtracks for the likes of The Proposition, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Wind River, and will bring those noir sensibilities to the series.
The show is produced by Working Title and based on author Nesbø’s global bestselling crime novels. The whodunnit serial killer drama stars Tobias Santelmann in the titular role of Harry Hole, the anti-hero detective. He goes head-to-head with his long-time adversary and corrupt detective, Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman), simultaneously working to catch a serial killer and bring Waaler to justice before it is too late.

Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace, is U.S. Poet Laureate and musician Joy Harjo’s debut for Smithsonian Folkways. In the album’s liner booklet, she relates her initial inspiration for assembling music with poetry: Her mother sitting at the kitchen table writing songs on an Underwood typewriter. Her mom was “inspired by the poetry she heard in the two-room schoolhouse that she attended in rural Arkansas and the music she heard in Tulsa dance halls and on the radio.” She is this album’s Muse; Harjo offers tribute in a version of her mother’s song “My Guy,” that was discovered by Harjo’s sister. Released a month before the composer’s 89th birthday, Irmin Schmidt‘s Requiem is a meditative work reflecting on loss and commemoration, as well as nature and the environment. The slowly unfolding composition, divided into two parts, is intended for deep listening. Schmidt gathered natural sounds such as rushing water and the calls of birds, frogs, and insects, hearing music within them, and decided to incorporate them into his own music. The beginning of Requiem features abstract piano notes laid over a bed of chirps and croaks, largely undisturbed, until some strange thrusting movements emerge after five minutes, resembling some sort of vehicle like a tractor manipulated into a rhythm. Peter Case at McCabes: My Life to Live is not the usual career retrospective of a veteran artist. Granted, the former leader of the Plimsouls spans his canon here, but in doing so over the course of the seventy-one-plus duration of this twenty-two cut sequence, he plays, sings, and speaks with a tangible sense of rediscovery.
Not coincidentally, there’s also a palpable sense of pride arising from the reimaginings of songs like “I Shook His Hand” off Case’s eponymous solo debut. Indie singer/songwriter Rae Chen began releasing his intimate, dreamy music under the pseudonym tofusmell in the early 2020s. He was still based in his home state of Florida when Hardly Art signed on to release his project’s debut EP, the home-recorded Humor, in 2023, although he soon relocated to Winnipeg, Canada.
