John Williams’ place in the canon of film music, Hollywood history and American popular culture is well solidified. The 94-year-old composer just saw the release of Disclosure Day, his 30th soundtrack for director Steven Spielberg – a collaboration that’s yielded three Oscar-winning scores in JAWS, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Schindler’s List plus memorable themes to classic films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones film series and Jurassic Park. Next year, his Oscar-winning work on 1977’s Star Wars – a musical odyssey that’s yielded a trio of film trilogies and multiple spin-off streaming shows and theme park attractions bearing more of his compositions – turns 50. Let’s look at the numbers: John Williams has been on this mortal plane for 93 years, and has been composing for visual media for 73 of those years. Compact discs have been a part of music lovers’ collections for at least four decades, and the “art” of John Williams on CD – a real, curatorial approach to his iconic film scores – began in earnest more than 30 years ago, when the 4CD box set Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology hit record stores in 1993. From basic compilations like Greatest Hits 1969-1999 to hefty box sets covering his material recorded with The Boston Pops and other orchestras on two labels between the ’80s and the ’10s – not to mention the Herculean restoration work of remastering and expanding Williams’ scores beyond…

In it, Robert Shaw plays an agent of Mossad in a race to stop a crazed blimp pilot (Bruce Dern) and a Black September operative (Marthe Keller) from detonating a bomb in the air above the Super Bowl. Featuring stunning footage of…
How else could we preface this? Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, John Williams’ acclaimed score to Steven Spielberg’s JAWS is rising up from the depths for its 50th anniversary. And this time, the bites are big. Williams’ longtime archivist Mike Matessino has remixed the original film score for a new release available digitally. These original tracks heard in the film remained unreleased until the early 2000s, but have never been heard with such clarity and precision.
“What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine… an eating machine.” That line of dialogue could just as easily describe Spielberg’s film as its fearsome leviathan. Peter Benchley’s novel about a great white shark wreaking havoc on…
