Following the release of her fifth studio album, Italian Ice, which featured members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Dap-Kings, among others, Nicole Atkins put out a live-tracked acoustic version of the album called Memphis Ice, then unintentionally entered into her longest gap between albums yet. Admitting that she struggled with some self-doubt as time went on, she eventually called on Wilco’s Pat Sansone to help her resurrect the lush, retro-minded Baroque pop that she’d become best known for.
