On their third LP, Celestial, the Brazilian progressive metal band Papangu cracks open a universe of possibility by foregoing digital shortcuts in favor of ecstatic analog craftsmanship. Following their blistering 2021 debut Holoceno and the percussive fables of Lampião Rei three years later, Celestial showcases the band’s exploratory techniques with spacey jazz and textured folk instruments, harkening back to the experimental prog of the ‘60s and ‘70s without overrelying on retro nostalgia.
