Yusef Lateef was a multi-instrumentalist, writer, professor, and thinker and created a genre of his own called, “autophysiopsychic music.” He led countless bands and made recordings showcasing his study and practice of musics from across the globe. His quartet on this unreleased date from Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase club included pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Bob Cunningham, and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath; all were present on several of Lateef’s Atlantic recordings during the 1970s. Lateef, a longtime friend and favorite of Segal’s, played the illustrious Jazz Showcase many times.
