It took some time before Motorpsycho and Theo Buhara found each other again.
The Italian director first collaborated with the Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan/Bent Sæther nucleus to score neo-Western “The Tussler” back in ’94. Why he chased young bucks notorious for feral stalkers with bass quakes dense enough to kill elephants from the inside (that “How Was I to Know,” son, yow) is anyone’s guess.
But it worked. The assignment seemed to center them. Off went the fuzzbox for a C&W kick some yonks before the Supersuckers or Ween’s attempts.
Thirty years later, the band’s still around, older, seasoned, refined. Buhara’s with us, too: at 74, a fistful of hourglass dust examining his legacy in countdown. Of course, he’s achieved more…

Motorpsycho has always been of the opinion that the most interesting stuff happens in any art form before it is formatted and settled. In rock music, this phenomenon peaked in and around 1970, and it is in this period that the best heavy music was made, simply because the rules weren’t set, there were no tropes yet, and there were no clichés to fall back on. The Gaia II Space Corps is an album of tunes that don’t quite sound like heavy metal or hard rock, but clearly is reaching for some of the same qualities. It is post-psychedelic, pre-metal music, and is probably as close to making a true blue ‘classic hard rock’ album Motorpsycho ever will come.

Back in 2008, Motorpsycho MK3 was beginning to gel and settle. Kenneth Kapstad’s entry into the band a year earlier had not only started to inspire a new and different writing, as shown in their first album, Little Lucid Moments, but also given the musicianship a solid kick up the behind. By summer 2008 the engine room was back to firing on all cylinders, ushering in a new era of intense and ambitious work for the band.
In hindsight it’s hard to quite remember the sequence of events, but some time early in 2008, an invitation to play the Terrastock Festival in Louisville dovetailed with an opportunity to fulfill the long held ambition to record at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini.
